Women of desire: an exploration

Throughout the ages, women have been the subject of desire and violence, and male artists have historically immortalised these moments in stone.

This series explores two iconic figures and their permanent struggle: Lucretia, inspired by Philippe Bertrand's sculpture depicting her self-inflicted stab wound to protect her honour after being violated, and Proserpina, taken from Gian Lorenzo Bernini's marble masterpiece capturing the physical impression of Hades' hands sinking into her flesh during her abduction.

Lucretia depicts a desire gone wrong that turns into vengeance, while Proserpina depicts a desire turned into possession. Layered against these images, the text "ti voglio bene" parallels a soft, immaterial sentiment of platonic love that has been utterly crushed by material violence.
